GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - A photo of long-time Canyon resident Melvin Johnet can be found at Verkamp's Visitor Center. In it, Johnet can be seen as the local school's Homecoming King for the year 1979. Area resident Judy Walker was homecoming queen alongside him. Walker currently works for the Grand Canyon School District. Johnet, meanwhile, will be celebrating 30 years at the market owned by Delaware North Company.

Delaware North Stores Manager Cendy Sangermano called Johnet an icon when it came to his presence at the store, located in the market plaza within the national park.

"It just would not be the same without him every day," Sangermano said. "Everyone just enjoys Melvin and loves being around him. It just would not be the same without him. He's worked for the Babbitt Company and now he works for Delaware North and we just appreciate him. He does a good job putting out the produce and the community looks forward to seeing him."

A "Melvin Day" is planned for May 6, Sangermano said, which will honor his years of hard work. Buttons will be worn in honor of Johnet and the 30-year employee's favorite lunch, barbecue chicken, will be served to all of the associates at the store.

Johnet started working at the market full time on May 1, 1980.

"I work in produce," Johnet said. "I was part time during high school. When I got out of high school I started working full time."

Johnet was born on the Hopi Reservation and spent most of his life within the Grand Canyon National Park.

"I just like working with my co-workers. Some of the people I have worked with for quite a while," Johnet said.
