Guest Column Please return your housing survey

Greg Bryan
Tusayan Mayor

Hello Tusayan and Grand Canyon residents and visitors.

What great rains we have had this past week and just in time to help diminish the fire dangers. We certainly have been lucky with minimal fire starts and the great crews to quickly deal with them. Let's pray we are able to finish out the summer in a similar manner.

Most of the employees in Tusayan should have re ceived a housing survey from their employers over the last few weeks along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. We have had a good number returned, but would like to get as many returned as possible. If you did not get one or lost it, you can stop by town hall Monday through Thursday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and pick one up. This survey will help our consultants in measuring the need and types of housing our residents would like. We handed them out through employers so that we could reach most everyone no matter where they currently live. There is another housing survey that the Stilo Group will mail out that is primarily working with their Camper Village units in the short-term. We encourage residents to fill out both surveys as a means of helping us all identify needs in our community.

As we move forward with housing, there will be a need to appoint a Housing Authority to manage the land and units. While we have not clearly defined the entity yet, we believe it will be the one that will have title to the land, define the types and numbers of units to be built, define how many rental versus ownership units, define the process of selection when the demand of people exceeds the supply of units and will have the long term job of overseeing the future of the affordable housing supply and resale. This going to be a very important and rewarding entity as it focuses on why we incorporated. HOUSING. We encourage residents to attend the next series of meetings with our consultants, International Housing Solutions, as we work on defining this entity and the roles it will play, so that you will be able to see if this is something you would like to be a part in making happen. We anticipate starting with our first council meeting in August.

Recently the new Tusayan Planning and Zoning Commission held its first meeting and has several more planned in the next few weeks. They still have one position open on the commission and we invite interested Tusayan residents to apply and become part of the process in developing our community. You can apply or get more information by stopping by town hall or calling (928) 638-9909, Monday through Thursday. The more people we have involved, the broader the base becomes in building our town and meeting our future needs.

Great job by the Chamber/Visitor's Bureau in putting on the Fourth of July parade and event! It raised some good money for the CVB and everyone had a great time. Thanks Josie and her team and the Chamber Board for all your hard work.

In case you haven't been to the town hall yet, it is located right next to the Grand Canyon Airport administrative offices, at the south end of the commercial terminals. We are the low green log sided building. Please stop by and say hi to your staff.

Our next council meeting is tonight at 6 p.m. at town hall. Please come and join us.

I thought the paper was going to stop the Mayor's propaganda letters?
