Editorial Opinion or propaganda?

Ryan Williams
Managing Editor

Merriam-Webster defines propaganda as the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause or a person.

A reader recently commented on our website that he thought we were going to stop printing Tusayan Mayor Greg Bryan's guest columns calling them "propaganda letters."

Bryan's column is printed every so often on the opinion page of the News. An appropriate forum I think.

As far as the definiton of propaganda goes, Bryan is attempting to spread information and maybe even ideas regarding the town of Tusayan. I'd leave off rumor in this case.

He's arguably doing this in an attempt to help an institution - the town of Tusayan.

I see Bryan's column as a way for the residents of Tusayan, Grand Canyon National Park and surrounding areas to keep informed on what the Tusayan Town Council is up to. Bryan generally gives an update on what occurred at recent council meetings.

You may not agree with a direction the council takes or the opinions expressed in Bryan's column but at least if you read the column, you know a little bit more about what Bryan thinks as well as recent council actions.

You're more informed.

Tusayan Town Council meetings are not the most well attended events. Until more than a handful of citizens start attending meetings, we'll keep running the column.

Disagree with the Mayor? Write a letter to the editor. We'll likely print it. The opinion page is, much like the comment section of our website, a place to express your opinion. To be heard. See the box on the left hand side of this page for information on submitting a letter.

Thanks for reading and keep commenting.

You go Bobby! By the way, how much campaign cash did you receive from STILO when you were running for office? It was all around the town that you were in their pocket just like the rest of the council. Heck the local news here is much better than the Times. They're way to liberal for real Arizonans. I lived in the big apple for three years. It was horrible. Give me Tusayan any day!

The way newspapers are supposed to work is that THEY ask the questions of elected politicians and, if the reporters don't get an answer, THEY are supposed to keep asking until they get an an honest answer. To allow these local politicians to write periodic "articles" and place them in the paper without question is worthless journalism and is hurting the community. This is the kind of stuff that happens in countries with dictators. Get with the program and start practicing freedom of the press.

I would have to concur with Joe and John. If you give a spot to Greg you would have to give a spot to the Mayor of Williams and on and on and on. I would rather hear the news from the editors and writers of the paper. Obama doesn't write an article once a week. He's a politician too. Let's get professional here, Ryan! Come on!

I think it stinks. It wouldn't be fair unless the Mayor of Williams also had a go.
