GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - It was Homecoming for the Phantoms on Jan. 9 as they faced off against the perennial mediocre Spartans from Ash Fork. The Phantoms played one of their best games of the season - that's not saying much considering it was only their second win of the entire season. But, the Phantoms will take the win.

The GC Phantoms looked uninspired during the first half of the game as they found themselves down 19-15 at halftime.

The second half was a different story. Maybe it was the inspiring words of Coach Greg Walker. Or, perhaps it was the half time ceremony that saw old individual school records taken down off the wall and the announcement of new records that inspired the Phantoms. The Grand Canyon boys came away with a 57-33 win to end the game.

The Phantoms outscored the Spartans 42-14 in the second half. Lerrin Talas led the team with 19 points in his long awaited season debut.

"It felt great to be back," he said. "It's really nice to have the whole team back together."

Also, Cuco Jaime had his best game of the season with 15 points - making four three-pointers.

Despite their dismal record, The Phantoms like their chances in the 1A West Division. They are now 2-2 in conference and feel that they can make a run at the division crown if they can build on their success from Jan. 9.

"We have a decent chance at second place in the division, and an outside chance at first place," said Assistant Coach Silas Aiken. "Right now we just need to take one game at a time."

The Phantoms improve to 2-13 overall and 2-2 in conference. Their next home game is Jan. 21, where they take on Shonto.
