GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Grand Canyon's Volunteer Resource Program Coordinator Todd Nelson recently received a Governor's Volunteer Service Award - the highest volunteer award in the state of Arizona.

The Arizona Governor's Volunteer Service Awards were established in 2002 to recognize volunteer efforts that strengthen communities and improve quality of life for Arizonans. Each year, eleven outstanding individuals and organizations are acknowledged in an effort to build an ethic of service and volunteerism throughout the state.

Recipients for the awards are nominated in eleven categories; and a statewide panel of judges evaluates the nominations for need, action, innovation and impact. Nelson received his award in the Service-Learning category, described as an educational experience in which students participate in an organized service project that meets community needs, improves understanding of the disciplines in which students are volunteering, and enhances the student's sense of civic responsibility.

Nelson received his award for planning, organizing and hosting an Alternative Break Citizenship School (ABC) with Break Away and Walnut Canyon National Monument. The ABC was held at Northern Arizona University; and 47 students from 33 universities participated, donating 658 volunteer hours to Walnut Canyon while learning how to facilitate an alternative break service-learning project during the 2011/2012 school year.
