Free diabetes and heart screenings in August for Grand Canyon residents
Williams-Grand Canyon News

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Grand Canyon residents now have access to free diabetes and heart screenings through the Northern Arizona Diabetes-Heart Connection and Diabetes Together programs. The free screenings are scheduled 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 13, 20 and 27 at Grand Canyon North Country Healthcare, 1 Clinic Rd. No appointment is necessary; for more information, call (928) 773-2379 or (928) 606-9975.

Services include identifying persons at risk for pre-diabetes using the American Diabetes Association recommendations; assessing for cardiovascular disease risk through a heart-health screening; providing an introductory visit with a certified diabetes educator and/or a registered dietitian; and developing a customized, culturally-competent plan to best address each person's individual needs.

Heart Connection and Diabetes Together are community-based programs sponsored by Flagstaff Medical Center, North Country HealthCare and Native Americans for Community Action. The programs are aimed at under-served, low-income Native Americans who are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease and/or diabetes. The 2001 National Institute of Health Strong Heart Study showed Native American participants with diabetes were four times more likely to experience heart failure than participants without diabetes.

The programs are funded by a $167,400 grant to FMC from the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation's Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM program. FMC is one of only 24 organizations nationwide to receive funds through the Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM program since its launch in 2010. The program supports innovative work in the field of cardiovascular health.
